CMY in real life

Ok, so as much as I hated Polaroid for discontinuing the instant camera and leaving millions of us stranded with no hope and empty boxes (see polaroid? i just met her! ), they have created a new product!! (which I am TOTALLY buying when I finish this dance show....) Of course the coolest thing about PoGo isnt that it is bluetooth happy and thus prints from ANYTHING, nor that it has a sticky back and can thus stick to ANYTHING, nor that it fits in your pocket and can thus go ANYWHERE....... No. The coolest thing about PoGo is that it is CMY !!! There is no ink---just little cyan, magenta, and yellow crystals that it heats up to create the perfect picture! How utterly cool is that? :P

red tape

the world of theatre is filled with all sorts of unconventional people and things who are defined as creative and dont care about the rules. For every one of these people there is a handler, whom we refer to as the bearer of red tape. Here is a standard experience which I have had over the last week. Remember: me-creative, C-A-red tape, JC-middleman.

sometime in december....

me: I got this email saying I am nominated for an award. I have to go F... for a week.

C-A: That's great! We will make sure you have a hotel to stay in, along with the other people who got nominated. Just figure out how to rent a car and give us the receipt. We won't pay for food, but other than that you are set.

me: Sweet.

sometime in january....

JC: So, youll need to be getting your hotel and we aren't getting reimbursed for the cars.

me: WHAT??? I dont have that kind of money for a week!

C-A: Don't look at us!

The truth about the matter is that dear old C-A has no idea what is actually going on in the world that he is trying to handle. And the result is confusion, chaos, and lack of funding. And now what am I supposed to do, seeing as I am supposed to go to this event in FOUR days. FOUR days to find a hotel in a completely booked town for the one event of the year which fills up their hotels. Not to mention that there are only two hotels, one of which is gross and the other of which is expensive. And I was nominated for an award and it sucks that my hands are tied like this.

In other news, the four draftings that I have due in four days are ....... not progressing at all. I keep getting distracted by lots of lovely things like making orange souffle, cleaning my house, organizing my library thing and perhaps most importantly trying to find a way to put all my books on the shelves without double stacking.

Which is never going to happen. I have too many wonderful books! And today my project is to clear the mantle so my loebs can go there instead of in the case and thus free up space. Yay for books!

man hole fire

Today was the first day back at graduate school. Officially. Of course, I was at school on Monday drafting and at school Tuesday in class and hanging a light plot....but that is all in the past now! What really matters is that today, on the day when I am actually scheduled to have class, we dont have class because of a "man hole fire". Yes. A man hole is on fire. I got the phone call after I was already on the bus, but that's ok. My hellish Wednesday just turned really low key--it's great!

things i had forgotten about

I forgot what it is like to work on a show in the ex. I forgot what it like when the sound designer doesnt come to rehearsals and as a result nothing is right. ever. I forgot what it is like to have an entire inventory of altmans from the 1970s. I forgot what it is like to be the only person in the room who knows how to set up foggers, attach molding, paint sets and run a tech rehearsal. I forgot what it is like to have a SM to whom the actors won't listen. I forgot what it is like to have a show about scene changes.

But, I also forgot what it was like to love every part of the silly old process.

a day in the life

december quote: "We will talk about this more as we get closer to the beginning of the next semester."

3 weeks of silence

january quote: "Your part of the project is due TODAY, tomorrow at the latest."

YAY for graduate school! and welcome to my life :)

so here we are, jan. 5th, and I have already teched one show and am apparently plotting another as i type. or rather, not as i type and that is the problem. i don't even know what format to submit this in! and this is just indicative of the way that it's been so far--me, not knowing what is going on and consistently being behind or wrong with everything that i turn in. of course, on the shows themselves im fine and apparently that is all that really matters. but i can't understand how i can sit in the room with five other people, take meticulous notes, and STILL not understand what i am supposed to bring to class the next week!! it blows my mind.

however, this most RECENT email from my professor perhaps explains it all. the answer: they dont want you to know what is due. its part of the process?????

*sigh*
