This is what separates artists from ordinary people: the belief, deep in our hearts, that if we build our castles well enough, somehow the ocean won't wash them away. I think this is a wonderful kind of person to be.”

heathersby heist tech begins!

last night, we started teching The Great Heathersby Heist--a new musical by Brian Tuttle and Erin Murry and also the first musical that 11:11 has ever done. The story is loosely based on the Gardner Museum heist in 1990. (Read about that HERE.) Our show is definitely a comic undertaking however--complete with a chorus of biddies! It is absolutely fabulous--so funny and so cute. The music is great, the book is great, the acting is great...tech has been an incredibly fun process so far.
This is the first musical that I have done since Factory Girls in 2009 and I have so enjoyed being back in that environment. I hope yall all come! Find Ticket Info HERE

"It's not real but maybe it's more than real. It's dreaming while you're awake."

Join me in a study of light and emotion as part of my graduate thesis project at Boston University. Come explore a visual and emotional landscape inspired by August Strindberg's A Dream Play. Performances run about 7 minutes and are individual experiences-- email me for an appointment during show times!

thesis introduction

So: it's time to introduce my thesis.  In a nutshell, I am presenting a lighting exploration of Strindberg's A dream play, which is one of my favorite plays of all time and full of really exciting imagery and craziness.  While the actual thesis will be presented in mid-April, I am workshopping some ideas with audience at the end of this month (scary thought!) in several venues, which is really great since I am trying to create narrative/experience/emotion through only light (no scenery, costumes, props, actors or sound).  In Strindberg's story, a girl named Agnes comes down to Earth to discover what being human is like.  She journeys through various senarios, all in a dream-like fashion: time and place are extremely fluid and people come and go as they are necessary.  I am currently in the process of finding the specific narrative within the material that I want to tell.

That being said, I have started really looking into how we visualize our dreams: what do you SEE when you dream? I have begun to write down my own dreams in the morning, hoping to have a better understanding of how we assign relationships and importance visually in our dreams.  I've also been asking anyone and everyone to tell me a little bit about what they see when they dream.  If you are interested in contributing to my non-visual visual research (hehe!), then please consider completing this survey:
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/59WMBMF

I have also begun to explore other people's visual representations of dreams and dream-like states.  In particular, my advisor suggested that I go back and watch Fantasia and the like.  (I've been looking at Disney, Miyazaki, Kurosawa, Dali.....anymore thoughts?)  Here are some highlights from that process so far:

Seem interesting?  I sure think so!  More to come, but if you are in Boston and interested in coming to see a few experiments, please let me know!  I am super excited about this project and it's ability to  challenge me to think about light in a different way.

"projections of light"

this is incredible

workshopping hedda gabler

My final show as a graduate student at Boston University will be a production of Hedda Gabler, held on the Mainstage/Boston University Theatre in May. We are most of the production team from diventare (with some exciting new additions) and we are bringing the fun collaborative/workshop style to this show that we discovered working together last year. Last week, we had a four day workshop for Hedda--exploring space and text together and developing a visual vocabulary for the show. I took video--there is no lighting, but it's pretty cool to watch and certainly was immensely helpful to the entire production team in figuring out what this play wants to be.
